Interval Study (Train Your Brain)

Since this tool has nothing to do with ear training, no sound will be generated! It is meant to train your brain in the practice of correctly identifying and spelling intervals.

Exercise controls are on the right. You can use manual or automatic operation. In either case, a random interval is chosen, and two of the three boxes on the left will be filled. Your job is to identify the contents of the third box.

Under each box is a list of possible values. These determine how the random intervals are chosen. Any value not checked will not be displayed in its corresponding box. Make selections based on what you want to practice. See the presets menu for suggestions. You can get more accidentals, including double sharps (denoted by "x") and double flats (denoted by "bb"), with the "More Accidentals" link under presets.

Special Note 1: Normally, a lone 7 means b7 but not in this tool. In this script, a lone 7 means Major 7.
Special Note 2: Major, Maj, M, Min, m, Dim, Aug, etc. are not used in this script.
Special Note 3: Script Errors! #1 (appears as b2), b1 (appears as 7), and b2 (at times appears as #1). Be careful!
Avoid the b1, #1, b2 and #2 questions until you can easily ID the script errors that occur under these scenarios!

Major intervals are represented by their respective major scale numbers. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Minor and diminished intervals are shown by a flat or double flat sign (b) (bb) in front of the major number.
Augmented intervals are displayed by a sharp sign (#) or a double sharp sign (x) in front of the major number.
Perfect intervals are represented by the letter "P" in front of their respective major scale numbers. 1, 4, 5, 8.

Capital letters in parentheses next to operation controls are keyboard shortcuts.

(REMEMBER! This tool was written so that 7 = Major 7 as it does in classical music theory.)
